Chapter eighteen

Arturo

After we finish cleaning up from dinner, Poppy takes a few minutes to get ready. I hop up the stairs, tossing on a new blue polo shirt and a pair of khaki pants my mom picked out. It’s not too bad, but certainly not my normal jeans and T-shirt look.

I chew on the inside of my lip. Should I just put on what I normally wear? Nope, I decide. I’m going to do the whole date thing to the fullest. I’m dressing the part. Once I’m done, I head outside to give Poppy privacy and walk over to the bench, just to rehash the plan and make sure that everything goes right tonight, no incidents, no panic attacks, no flashing emotions from either of us.

Jack and his team will leave when we do, but stay behind us the entire time. I’m supposed to text them when we go to the car. And I won’t forget because I want her to be as calm as possible at the festival.

I get a beep from my phone and see it’s from Poppy. My smile widens as the “Where are you?” question comes through. I text her back and tell her I’m outside. I’ll be right in to get her.

Halfway over to the cabin, I see her walking out in a white dress. The skirt is full, and the short sleeves cap at her bicep. The polka dots scattered over the fabric are blue and purple, and her hair is pulled high on her head, revealing her long neck. I don’t think I’ve ever seen it fully because she has so many curls.

“I was supposed to come get you,” I say, walking beside her. Her warm honey scent drapes over me, and I slip into it easily. I take her by the elbow and make sure she looks at me. “You look beautiful.”

Her cheeks instantly bloom rose red, and fans down her neck and over her chest. “Thank you,” a sweet smile spreads over her lips as she says it. “You look dashing too.”

She’s marginally taller than she normally is, and I check out her shoes. “You’re wearing heels?”

“Well, I’ve been told wearing black boots with a white dress looks tacky, so I picked these out.”

“Ah, Lia, huh?” I pull out my phone.

“The dress and heels were forced upon me by your sister. Almost as if she knew what was coming.”

I shake my head and shrug. I didn’t talk to anyone except Mateo and my Mom after they went shopping. “Mateo is the one who always knows things. Maybe Lia’s picking up some tidbits from him?” I grin as she continues.

“It’s not like I packed heels in the hopes that a charming billionaire would take me to a small-town festival on our travels,” she laughs. The light in her eyes is nice, easy. It’s something I’m not sure she’s ever let herself have.

Although I’ve only known her briefly, the look on her face brings a brightness to her that seems new, fresh, and happy.
